A teacher plays an overall oversight role in learning with educational games. The teacher, other than identifying and selecting the most appropriate games for the students, facilitates the formation of various groups and defines the role of each group member (Balkis, 1987). He also plans and schedules the time and place for these games. He then clarifies the rules and supervises all games. Finally, the teacher must assess the students to determine whether the intended goals have been achieved.
Disadvantages of Learning with Educational Games
Learning with educational games may sometimes have several drawbacks. To begin with, some students may find it hard to accept and obey the rules of the game. This fact may lead to game irregularities, dishonesty, and disputes that could result in uncontrollable noise (Green et al., 2012). In some cases, students fail to understand the objective of the game and end up entertaining themselves instead of learning.
Learning with educational games is a method that seeks to promote the cognitive and behavioral development of students in various ways, as discussed above. However, it must be adequately planned and executed for the rightful achievement of these objectives. It is, therefore, the duty of a teacher to organize students and ensure that these objectives are met.
